Three people charged after 6-year-old girl dies after being left inside daycare van, police say

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC/Gray News) - Three people in Memphis are charged in the death of a 6-year-old girl who died after being left inside a daycare van, according to authorities.

Tametria Norry, Sabrina Powe and Amilya Hardin were each indicted on charges of aggravated child neglect, criminally negligent homicide and destruction of and tampering with governmental records.

On the morning of Aug. 13, Winter Jones was dropped off at Kid University and was supposed to be taken to Macon Hall Elementary School.

She was discovered unresponsive later that afternoon after she was left inside the van.

Officials said Norry was the driver of the van, Powe is the assistant director of Kid University, and Hardin is an assistant at the daycare.

After Winter’s death, the Tennessee Department of Human Services investigated Kid University and found the daycare noncompliant with several transportation requirements.

Inspectors reported that required vehicle inspection procedures were not completed after children were unloaded, the transportation log was not accurately completed, and required walk-throughs to confirm all children were off the vehicle were not conducted.
