69-year-old man hit and killed while getting mail, police say

PLAQUEMINE, La. (WAFB/Gray News) - A 69-year-old man died after he was struck by a truck while checking his mailbox, authorities said.

The crash occurred on Louisiana Highway 75, just south of Louisiana Highway 404 in Iberville Parish, shortly before 4 p.m. Monday.

According to Louisiana State Police, a 2024 Chevrolet Silverado was traveling south on Highway 75 when it struck a man near the southbound shoulder. Troopers said the man was in the roadway retrieving his mail.

The man was taken to the hospital, where officials say he died from his injuries. The Iberville Parish Coroner’s Office identified him as James Berthelot, 69.

The driver of the truck was not injured, according to State Police.

Investigators did not immediately disclose whether impairment was a suspected factor in the crash.

The investigation is ongoing.
