Man accused of catfishing victim into getting engaged by using AI, voice-changing technology

ATHENS, Ga. (WHNS/Gray News) - A man in Georgia reportedly spent months believing he was engaged to a female sheriff’s deputy he had never met, eventually giving the catfish suspect money and even allowing the use of his vehicle.

Police said the woman never existed.

Investigators allege 25-year-old Caleb Mills, from South Carolina, created the fake identity “Hailey Morello” using stolen photos of a real Florida sheriff’s deputy, multiple phone numbers, artificial intelligence and voice-changing technology.

Police say Mills used the persona to establish online relationships and allegedly defraud victims.

One victim became so convinced the relationship was real that police say he believed he was engaged to “Hailey,” exchanged vehicles with Mills and gave him an undisclosed amount of money, People reported.

Mills allegedly filed a harassment complaint with police while posing as “Hailey” after the victim’s relatives began contacting him. Detectives investigating that complaint ultimately uncovered the alleged scheme.

Mills was arrested on charges including identity fraud, impersonating a public officer, giving a false name to law enforcement and making false statements.

According to officials, Mills has been released on bond since his arrest and has continued carrying out fraudulent acts. Further charges are possibly pending.
