BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - The Greater Birmingham Humane Society (GBHS) has issued what they’re calling an Emergency Pet Pantry Alert, according to the shelter’s Facebook page.

The organization, which runs primarily on volunteer efforts and donations to aid, find placement for, and provide a better the quality of life for animals in central Alabama, says it is specifically “running low on dog and cat food” and needs community support to “keep bowls full and tails wagging.”

The pet pantry itself supports pet owners facing tough times by providing essential supplies for pets of all ages.

For many pet owners, financial strain can come down to the sometimes-dire choice between providing for a pet and surrendering them to an already over-crowded shelter.

“Our pet pantry allows them to keep their pet while they’re going through a hard time,” said Stephanie Salvago of GBHS.

To make giving easy, GBHS provided two links to online wish lists that can be found by clicking or tapping here and here with some of the items requested valuing as low as $1.50.

They also say anyone who wishes to drop off donations directly can do so at their GBHS Adoption center.
