Blount County judge denies youthful offender status for former jailer accused in inmate’s death
BLOUNT COUNTY, Ala. (WBRC) - A former Blount County corrections officer charged in the murder of an inmate was denied youthful offender status Tuesday by a judge.

State prosecutors have alleged that she, along with Joseph Evans, punished Morse for being unable to stand, walk or eat while he suffered from a medical episode.
Prosecutors also said they have evidence indicating Valdez-Carbajal actively participated in the assault.
Attorneys for Valdez-Carbajal have said their client was just 18 at the time Morse died,
Following the judge’s decision, her attorneys said:
“While we are disappointed with the decision regarding youthful offender status, Lilly appreciates the opportunity to have been heard and to have her request thoughtfully considered. She is also grateful for the opportunity to clear her name in connection with the death of Mr. Morse. While undeniably sad and tragic, Mr. Morse’s passing was not a murder, notwithstanding the State’s insinuations, inferences, and conclusions to the contrary.”
Attorney Rick DiGiornio represents the family of Arthur Morse. He gave the following response Tuesday following Judge Gregory Reid’s decision:
“Based on what we’ve heard [regarding evidence in the case], we are not surprised.”
