BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Birmingham Police Department, and the FBI announced the results Thursday of Operation Safe Summer, a joint initiative aimed at reducing crime in the region.

The operation resulted in 150 traffic stops, 103 warnings issued, 193 citations, 76 arrests, 193 outstanding warrants cleared, 13 illegal firearms seized, and 26 business safety checks conducted.

Sheriff Mark Pettway said the numbers reflect more than enforcement activity. Each traffic stop represented an opportunity to prevent crime, each warrant cleared represented accountability, and each firearm removed represented the potential to prevent future violence, Pettway said.

FBI vows action against violent crime over holiday

Law enforcement leaders said they plan to build on those results heading into the Fourth of July holiday weekend. FBI Birmingham Special Agent in Charge Dave Fitzgibbons said federal, state and local agencies have been working together throughout the initiative.

“We are working around the clock with federal, state and local partners to make sure everyone has a good time but doesn’t try to do any kind of violent crime or wreak havoc in the community,” Fitzgibbons said.

With the nation preparing to mark its 250th anniversary, Fitzgibbons issued a direct warning to anyone considering criminal activity over the holiday.

“As we head into the weekend to celebrate America’s 250th birthday, let me be clear to anyone out there even thinking about committing a violent crime: the FBI will hunt you down alongside our partners; we will find you, and we will hold you accountable to the furthest extent of the law,” Fitzgibbons said.

Sheriff urges community awareness, fireworks safety

Jefferson County Sheriff Mark Pettway said deputies will be stationed at events throughout the weekend.

“We want everyone to have a great time. Obey the rules, pay attention to what you’re doing, be careful around fireworks,” Pettway said.

Pettway also encouraged community members to contact law enforcement if they observe anything concerning.

“If there’s something that’s escalating, please call us, let us know. That’s what we’re here for, and we want to make sure we handle any situation before it gets out of hand,” Pettway said.
