HOMEWOOD, Ala. (WBRC) - One year ago, 18-year-old Jabari Peoples was shot and killed by a Homewood police officer.

The case gained national attention and sparked protests and boycotts in the city. But a year later, Peoples’ family says they are still seeking justice.

Tuesday, dozens of family, friends, supporters and community activists gathered at Homewood Soccer Park in the area where Peoples was shot to remember him. They also spelled out his name in candles.

“Say his name: Jabari Peoples. Say his name: Jabari Peoples,” the crowd said multiple times.

Terry Sterling, Jabari’s uncle, said it’s been a tough year for them as they continue to remember their loved one and ask questions about the case.

“We’re going to get through this. We’re going to keep his name alive. Regardless of what happened in terms of the police department or whatever, we’re going to stay together as a family. We’re going to keep his name and legacy alive,” Terry Sterling, Jabari’s uncle said.

A year ago, the 18-year-old was shot and killed by a Homewood police officer after police said they were investigating a suspicious vehicle when Peoples, who was in the car, got into some sort of physical altercation with the officer before investigators say Peoples pulled out a gun. The officer then shot him.

At the vigil, Peoples’ family said they still don’t believe what police say happened. Community activists said this wasn’t just a vigil, but a call to action. They are calling for another boycott in Homewood until they get answers.

“We’re calling to our people to stand up, to fight back, to get loud, to show up, and to make their voices heard and to say the names of all of our brothers and sisters whose lives have been taken by injustice and by police violence,” Eric Hall with Black Lives Matter Birmingham said.

In August, the use of force by police was ruled justified by Jefferson County District Attorney Danny Carr. Carr said bodycam footage showed Peoples had a gun in his hand when the Homewood officer fired. Peoples’ family and their attorney dispute the findings.

WBRC reported last year that family attorneys were considering filing a wrongful death lawsuit in connection to the case. We reached out to the attorneys to find out where that stands. We’ll keep you updated.
