BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - The Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs (ADVA) is working to combat veteran suicides in multiple ways, but one way is through a yard sign that helps remind veterans there is a bigger purpose to life than moments of stress or anxiety.

The “You Are Bigger Than This Moment” campaign was launched last year, but the ADVA is working to grow and expand the campaign. It features a yard sign which helps raise awareness about the campaign.

“This campaign primarily is a reminder that as life gets stressful, unfortunately, we all know that it’s going to, as you’re working through those moments of stress and anxiety, please remember that you have a bigger purpose. You have a bigger impact, whether it’s on your loved ones, friends, family, and we’ve got to get you through these moments,” explained Brandon Miller, director of outreach for ADVA.

ADVA provides 24/7 support and resources, and this yard sign aims to remind veterans that they are not alone. It shares the Veterans Crisis Line which is accessible by dialing 988 and pressing 1.

Miller emphasized it helps promote the resources ADVA has across the state and in communities that can fit someone’s needs. Whether that be the crisis line, a veteran service organization or a different type of social group, there’s an array of resources that can be found at ADVA’s website.

“It can be a complex issue, in terms of well-being,” Miller said. “So, it’s fitting what veterans need, or again, their families as well, because we are taking care of families.”

Miller says recent partners of the campaign include veterans service organizations statewide, members of the Alabama League of Municipalities (mayors, city council members and more), the Alabama Veterans Resource Center and signs displayed at each of ADVA’s county offices.

WBRC has also joined the campaign with a sign outside of the station.
