Amazon also says after law enforcement provided the all clear, the remainder of the shift was canceled and employees were sent home with pay. Dayshift operations for Jan. 19 are also canceled. Employees will be paid for missed time and counseling resources will be made available for employees when they return to work.
Bessemer City Councilman Cleo King shared the following statement:
“I am deeply saddened by the gun violence that occurred in our community last night. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and all who have been impacted by this tragic act.
Scripture reminds us, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit” (Psalm 34:18). In this moment of grief, we lift up those who mourn and those working toward healing.
I am grateful for the swift and courageous response of our first responders and law enforcement officers. As a member of the Bessemer City Council, I remain committed to working with community leaders, faith partners, and residents to address the root causes of violence and to advance solutions to promote safety, peace and unity throughout our city.
As Dr. Martin Luther King Kr. reminded us, “Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars.”
The Bessemer Police Department is investigating the shooting as a homicide.
