Volunteers to honor 9/11 victims at Alabama National Cemetery
MONTEVALLO, Ala. (WBRC) - Volunteers are expected to gather at the Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo to help clean headstones and beautify the grounds as part of a nationwide day of service marking the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

The event is one of nearly 70 cemetery cleanups organized by Carry The Load, a national nonprofit that honors military service members and first responders. Thousands of volunteers are expected to participate across the country.

“Patriot Day is a powerful reminder of the courage and sacrifice shown by our first responders and military on 9/11 and beyond,” said Stephen Holley, co-founder and CEO of Carry The Load and a veteran U.S. Navy SEAL. “By coming together to serve our communities and honor stories of the fallen, we ensure their legacy lives on, and we remind ourselves that freedom is never free.”

In addition to the Montevallo event, Carry The Load is encouraging Americans to register for volunteer opportunities at cemeteries nationwide. Registration is free at carrytheload.org.
