BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - Governor Kay Ivey said her top priority this legislative session is safety. She is pleased with the progress being made so far.

A bill to ban Glock switches at the state level has passed both the Senate and House and is heading back to the Senate for final approval. Gov. Ivey says she is looking forward to signing this bill.

The Glock switch ban bill is a part of Gov. Ivey’s public safety package aiming to reduce violent crime. Ivey said the law is necessary in cities where we have seen gun crime and deadly shootings involving conversion devices.

Another bill now heading to Governor Ivey’s desk is a bill that will restructure the Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs. Gov. Ivey said all veterans in the state deserve to be taken care of.

“In Alabama, we have 400,000 veterans and my father was a veteran in World War II, so I am passionate about taking care of our veterans. We need to take care of all 400,000 of them. Not just a portion of our veterans,” said Gov. Ivey.

The legislature is on break until next week and will reconvene on March 18.
