Man charged with manslaughter after 10-year-old girl killed while riding scooter in Shelby Co.
MONTEVALLO, Ala. (WBRC) - The Montevallo Police Department obtained an arrest warrant for manslaughter on 45-year-old John David Winton, of Montevallo.
Police say Winton is charged with manslaughter after 10-year-old Ember Poe was struck by a vehicle while she was riding her scooter. She died eight days later.
Court documents show Winton was under the influence of a controlled substance.
The traffic accident happened on Nov. 5, 2024 in the 300 block of spring Creek Road.
Winton was taken into custody by Montevallo Police and transported to Shelby County Jail.
correction: We previously reported that Winton was accused of driving 80 miles per hour in a 70-mile-per-hour zone when Ember Poe was hit. That is incorrect. Winton was ticketed in 2013, accused of driving 86 miles per hour in an area zoned 70-miles-per hour.
