BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - The WE Cafe is a charming diner in West End where the food is delicious, healthy and made from scratch. Here’s the bonus. If you can’t afford to pay for lunch it’s free. The pay-as-you-can community restaurant was developed under the watchful eye of Ama Shambulia, the director of Urban Ministry’s WE Cafe and garden.

Good food brings people together. Among the diners you’ll find business people sitting next to someone who may be living on the streets. One can’t pay for lunch but the other can pay for two. Shambulia says, “It’s a beautiful thing to look out and see genuine coming together of people from different walks of life.”

Volunteers provide a lot of elbow grease to keep things running and and there are young interns learning the restaurant business from washing dishes to serving. That is part of the mission. Shambulia explains,"There's one level of community where everybody sits around the table but there's another level where everyone participates to make it happen". She adds that it is a lot of work but the results are worth every minute.

The WE Cafe serves lunch on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 11:00-1:30. It’s location is 1229 Cotton Ave SW. To see what’s on the menu check it out here.
