Birmingham City Schools filling key vacancies ahead of new school year

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - With the first day of school just around the corner on Monday, Birmingham City Schools leaders said they are in a much stronger staffing position compared to last year.

However, the district is still seeking to fill about 100 teacher vacancies and is reminding parents that student registration and transportation checks are critical to ensure a smooth start.

District leaders said they are working hard to fill the remaining classroom openings across various grade levels and subject areas. Despite these vacancies, officials emphasize that the district is starting the academic year in a far better place than last summer.

“School does start on Monday and if you have not registered your child for school, it’s very easy,” Birmingham City Schools Superintendent Dr. Mark Sullivan said. “You can do it on your phone.”

Dr. Corvetta Clasberry, the Human Resources Officer for Birmingham City Schools, echoed the superintendent’s optimism about the district’s hiring progress.

“With our vacancies, we have more hired,” Clasberry said. “We actually met with a group today. We have a little more than 100 with vacancies for the school year so we are in great shape [compared to] where we were last year. Great shape.”

While the general hiring outlook is positive, some subject areas still require additional personnel.

“We still have positions in our secondary level, our specific content areas - English, math, science, social studies, and we still have elementary positions as well,” Clasberry said.

While the search for certified classroom teachers continues, the district has successfully resolved staffing needs for support roles. Leaders announced that all classified positions, including bus drivers, are fully staffed.

With transportation staff completely secured, operations officials are now urging parents to verify their children’s eligibility and information before Monday morning.

“Make sure your address and information is correct and also make sure that you qualify for transportation because you only qualify if you are outside of the two mile radius of your zoned school,” Michael Moore, the Operations Officer for Birmingham City Schools, said. “That is what qualifies you for transportation.”
