Downtown Columbiana is getting a major makeover; here’s what’s coming
COLUMBIANA, Ala. (WBRC) - Shelby County is booming, and city leaders are turning empty alleyways into destinations.
Shelby County’s population has jumped 7% since 2020, that’s 15,000 new neighbors, and the city of Columbiana is making big moves to welcome more folks.
But city leaders say this isn’t about growing fast. It’s about growing smart.
‘Intelligent Growth’
Mayor Lisa Davis says new development is welcome, with conditions.
“We are trying to contain our growth to slow, steady, intelligent growth,” Davis told WBRC. “We do want to try to always maintain our small-town charm, while also offering some big city amenities.”

Becoming a Destination
New shops and restaurants are already opening, even new event space for bridal showers and private parties.
Columbiana’s New Main Street Director Dee Starkey says spending locally has a ripple effect.
“When you purchase local, you are not only supporting that local shop owner who lives here locally and cycles back in and shops locally as well, but you’re supporting the city,” Starkey said.
The Back Alley Transformation
Right now, a downtown back alley holds trailers and trash cans. Soon, it could be a walkable extension of the business district.
The vision includes:
- An outdoor patio from the downtown wine shop
- Building renovations along the alley
- Rear access to businesses, boosting walkability
“We’re updating this back alley,” Davis shared. “Some buildings are going to be renovated.”

$200,000 Project — No City Money Used
Progress is already visible. Businesses and donors raised around $200,000 to install a new handicap-accessible playground and pavilion that connects downtown to Old Mill Square Park.
Mayor Davis confirmed: no city money was spent.
What’s Next
The mayor says more is on the way, including:
- Downtown murals
- New lighting
- Continued beautification projects
“This time next year I think it’s going to have a completely different look, and we’re really, really excited about just making Columbiana more accessible,” Davis said.
