TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WBRC) - Members of the Tuscaloosa Bar Association gathered at the Tuscaloosa County Courthouse steps Thursday for their annual reading of the Declaration of Independence ahead of Independence Day.

Sixteen lawyers, including practicing attorneys and sitting judges, took turns reading portions of the document. Service members and members of the Sons of the American Revolution also participated in the ceremony.

Tuscaloosa County District Attorney Hays Webb, who helped start the tradition around 2011 or 2012, called the Declaration of Independence “one of our founding documents” and said it is essential to the freedoms celebrated on the Fourth of July.

“Great gratitude for our nation, for our freedoms and for those who provided those things to us. And this year, our 250th anniversary, it’ll be even more special this year. Great reminder about all the people who made this possible,” Webb said.
