Man, woman killed in Birmingham shooting identified
Five other people were injured
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - Birmingham Police are investigating after seven people were shot Thursday night, June 4.
Two of them, a woman and a man, were killed. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office has identified them as 50-year-old Benard Duane Montez Watts and 33-year-old Diandra Young Johnson. Both were from Birmingham.
“We are on the scene of a massive shooting,” police say.
Birmingham Police say they were called to the 100 block of Holley Avenue just after 8:30 p.m. on a report of multiple people shot.
Officers say when they arrived, they found at least seven people suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue arrived and took all of the victims to UAB Hospital where two died.
Police say early investigations have revealed that there was “some sort of gathering” that was going on when gunfire erupted.

Birmingham officials say they are “actively working” to find out what happened.
“We won’t sleep until we find out who has done this, who has caused this tragedy in this community.”
Authorities say there is a helicopter overhead to assist in a search and that there are at least 30+ shell casings that they have marked so far.
“Everyone has their boots on the ground trying to figure out what happened here.”
Officials say none of the victims shot are juveniles.

At this time, there is no one in custody, but police say they have transported “a ton” of people to police headquarters for questioning.
“Right now, our officers are still gathering up information, gathering up witnesses to transport more people down there to ask them questions.”
