UAB removes interim tag from Alex Mortensen, names him permanent head football coach

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - UAB has hired Alex Mortensen as their new head football coach.

Mortensen has been the interim coach for the Blazers since the firing of Trent Dilfer earlier this season. In his first game as interim, the Blazers upset then #22 Memphis.

Mortensen worked under Nick Saban as an analyst from 2017-2019 and 2020-2022 before becoming the UAB offensive coordinator in 2023.

Under his guidance, the Blazers set a school record for yards per game in 2023.

Mortensen is no stranger to Birmingham having coached in the Magic City for the last three years and played quarterback for Samford from 2006-2007.
