WSFA 12 News’ parent company to buy WCOV, 9 other TV stations
Gray Media will soon own a second Montgomery TV station
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) - Gray Media, the parent company of WSFA 12 News, is announcing a major purchase agreement that will see the company acquire multiple television stations across the country, including Montgomery’s WCOV Fox 20.
Gray Media announced Friday that it has reached a deal with Allen Media Group to buy 10 TV stations for $171 million.
The purchase brings Gray Media into three new TV markets and expands its presence in seven others by creating duopolies, which will allow the company “to preserve and deepen public service to their communities with expanded local news, local weather, and local sports programming.”
The TV stations that will come under Gray ownership include:
| Designated Market Area (DMA) | Market | Station |
|---|---|---|
| 75 | Huntsville, AL | WAAY (ABC) |
| 90 | Paducah-Cape Girardeau-Harrisburg | WSIL (ABC) |
| 109 | Evansville, IN | WEVV (CBS/FOX) |
| 110 | Ft. Wayne, IN | WFFT (FOX) |
| 121 | Montgomery, AL | WCOV (FOX) |
| 124 | Lafayette, LA | KADN (FOX/NBC) |
| 134 | Columbus-Tupelo, MS | WTVA (ABC/NBC) |
| 137 | Rockford, IL | WREX (NBC) |
| 159 | Terre Haute, IN | WTHI (CBS/FOX) |
| 189 | West Lafayette, IN | WLFI (CBS) |
WCOV signed on the air in April 1953, becoming Montgomery’s first TV station. It operated as a CBS affiliate for decades before transitioning to Fox in the 1980s.
Los Angeles-based media conglomerate AMG bought WCOV in 2022 from the Woods family of Montgomery, which had owned it for decades.
Gray says it anticipates closing the sales transaction in the fourth quarter of 2025 after regulatory approval, including certain waivers of FCC local ownership rules, and other customary closing conditions.
