Plank Road Station looking to restore Masonic lodge damaged in the storm
TALLADEGA COUNTY, Ala. (WBRC) - The cleanup continues in Winterboro in Talladega County after an EF-2 tornado swept through the community destroying homes and the old high school. Another building damaged was the Old Masonic Lodge which was being used by a non-profit organization.
Becky Griffin with Plank Road Station says this community building was the future home of artifacts and historical gifts they had received over the years.
Griffin says after the recent tornado in Winterboro, her organization is left wondering about their next move. She says the old Masonic Lodge on Hwy 21 was moved in 2001 to the current location.
Griffin says the building was offered to Plank Road Station and they’ve been restoring it ever since.
Before the storm, Griffin says they had just finished the floors upstairs and were preparing to start working on the museum. She say she knows the building is old but it’s a staple in the Winterboro Community.
“We have lost several of our members over the years, but we still have been focused on the building and know what we want to do with it, and we’ve continued to work toward it. It’s a very strong building so, we lost the roof, we lost windows, and we got major water damage inside,” said Griffin.
Griffin says she hopes the insurance company will be able to help. She says if they receive the money, they’ll continue with their plans.
