Uncertainty over tariffs has consumers questioning big purchases
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - With tariffs in flux, many consumers are wondering whether now is the time to make major purchases—or if they should hold off.
Economists say there’s no universal answer. Instead, it depends on personal finances and how prepared individuals are to absorb potential price increases.
Dr. Ben Meadows, an assistant professor of economics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, says uncertainty is the prevailing theme when it comes to tariffs.
Some proposed tariffs have recently been delayed or put on hold, adding to the unpredictability.
For now, prices remain steady. But according to Meadows, if and when tariffs do take effect, the financial burden will ultimately fall on consumers—whether they’re buying a new car or simply shopping for groceries.
“An American consumer cannot fight tariffs on their own. These are just passed-through costs that American consumers will just have to deal with. So when folks ask me what can I do personally to fight a tariff, the answer is absolutely nothing. When I think about the average American, this is more of a personal finance question than an economics question.”
With that in mind, experts say consumers should assess their finances and adjust spending habits accordingly. Whether it’s cutting back on everyday expenses or reconsidering big-ticket purchases, being proactive could help ease the impact of potential price hikes.
