ORLANDO, Fla. (WBRC) - Florida-based Orlando Health announced Monday that they signed a definitive agreement to purchase Tenet Healthcare’s majority interest in Brookwood Baptist Health.

The deal is expected to close in the fall of 2024.

In the press release, Orlando Health says they will manage the day-to-day operations in partnership with Baptist Health System, and it will remain a faith-based organization.

To honor that legacy, the name of the system will change from Brookwood Baptist Health to just Baptist Health.

“We are honored to further Brookwood Baptist Health’s mission of extending the healing ministry of Christ. There is a need and opportunity for a private, not-for-profit healthcare system in this market,” said David Strong, president and CEO of Orlando Health. “We believe this is a new day in healthcare for our organizations and look forward to making Brookwood Baptist the best healthcare system in Alabama.”

Headquartered in Orlando, Fla., Orlando Health has multiple hospitals, free-standing emergency rooms, and more across the southeastern United States and Puerto Rico.

Thibaut van Marcke will lead Orlando Health’s efforts in our state. He says Birmingham is a unique market that is growing and they are excited to differentiate themselves from the other healthcare systems by being the only private, non-profit health system in Central Alabama.

“Our goal is to learn as much from the community as we can and to make sure that we really develop meaningful community partnerships and meaningful relationships with physicians and physician groups,” said van Marcke. “I think what’s really exciting about this is taking the best of what Orlando Health has been able to accomplish in the markets that we serve now and really work with the local team and the local community to figure out what that’s gonna mean here.”

Amy Allen, the President and CEO of Baptist Health System, said they are pleased to have Orlando Health as a majority and managing partner.

They have a proven track record in delivering high-quality healthcare services and are well positioned to invest in our community,” Allen said. “We are excited to welcome them to Birmingham and to jointly support the faith-based mission of Brookwood Baptist Health.

Brookwood Baptist Health was created in 2015 after a merger agreement between Tenet Healthcare and Baptist Health System.

The close of sale is expected to happen September 30, 2024.
