BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - Jefferson State Community College will be holding a welding course this fall specifically for women.

The Women in Welding scholarship program is a 15-week welding course that will cover all expenses for 12 women looking to get into welding.

Through a grant from The Women’s Foundation of Alabama, the 12 women selected for the program will have the cost of their classes covered, given a transportation stipend, and be provided with the tools for the classes.

Classes will be held from Aug. 7 through Nov. 22 at the Welding Center at Jefferson State’s St. Clair-Pell City Campus.

Christine McLaine is a career success coach for Jefferson State Community College. She said the program will also offer one-on-one career coaching.

“Not only in helping them be successful in class but study skills, time management, how to overcome obstacles. We’re also going to help with soft skills training for job seekers. So resume writing, cover letters, interviewing skills, mock interviews. We’re going to bring employers in for them to network with,” said McLaine.

Applicants need to have a high school diploma and show economic need. Women with children enrolled at St. Clair County Head Start will be given priority.
