TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WBRC) -A groundbreaking was held Thursday for a new fire station in Tuscaloosa.

Station 6 on Hargrove Road East will replace the old fire station that used to be on the VA campus.

City leaders say it will cost around $6 million. That includes buying the property and the design work. Mayor Walt Maddox says the new fire station will be built in the neighborhood he grew up in.

“Fire station 6 is going to be my favorite fire station because I know what it will mean to the people of Idlewood, Circlewood, Cedar Knoll, Cross Creek, so many places right around this special place here,” said Maddox.

“While I was a police officer and I am proud of that, today I am proud to stand with the firefighters. Chief Smith is doing a great job with us,” said Tuscaloosa City Councilman John Faile.

Maddox says the fire station should be finished within 14 months.
