BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - If you need something to look forward to as we struggle through the next few months waiting coronavirus distribution, baseball will likely be back in Birmingham next summer.
The Birmingham Barons, who lost their 2020 season to COVID-19 say the Chicago White Sox have invited the Barons to remain their AA baseball affiliate in 2021.
General Manager Jonathan Nelson says he is still waiting to see the terms of the White Sox Player Development License and for guidance from Major League Baseball about scheduling as it navigates coronavirus for another season. But he’s excited about the continuing relationship with the White Sox, noting that more than 40 minor league clubs did not get invitations as MLB seeks to streamline its operations.
“For the Barons and for Birmingham to be extended an invitation by the White Sox, who we’ve been with for the last 34 years, is quite special and a testament to the community’s support, Regions Field, the city of Birmingham and the overall organization” says Nelson.
“We look forward as much as anyone to turn the page to 2021and getting back to some more fun things in the Magic City like coming to a Barons game at Regions Field,” Nelson added.
