Shades Valley boys' basketball teams collect socks for Birmingham Firehouse shelter
BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - For the past few weeks, the Shades Valley boys' basketball teams have been collecting socks for the Birmingham Firehouse shelter.
They arrived at the shelter with hundreds of pairs just in time for the holidays.
"We went in to visit the whole facility. We saw they had a closet, but they didn't have as many socks. So I came up with the idea to create a sock drive. The goal was to just to give back. So when I thought of it, I wanted it to be everybody gets two pair of socks. Then we reached a goal of 1,300 and can do three pair of socks. We sat boxes around the school, hung flyers and made morning announcements letting people know where to bring socks. They were willing to give money and socks. It was just as long as I reach my goal to help others and that's all that matters. It's very positive. It clearly shows we go to school, they'll see us, they'll know we did this thing for the firehouse shelter which is very generous. Not that many people my age would think to do something like this so I'm glad I did it," said Christian Stewart.
Stewart was chosen to represent Shades Valley on the Youth Philanthropy Council.
He joined other students in the Magic City learning about giving their time and helping their community.
