AUBURN, Ala. (WSFA) - A defensive touchdown 10 seconds into the contest sparked Auburn to a dominant performance in all three phases as the Tigers routed Southern Miss 43-8 on Saturday.

Auburn set the tone on Southern Miss’ opening possession. Under pressure from Dorian Walker, Golden Eagles quarterback Ethan Hampton was intercepted on his first pass by Austin Jordan Jr., who returned it 29 yards for a touchdown to give Auburn a 7-0 lead just 10 seconds into the game.

The Tigers steadily built their advantage throughout the first half. Hank Brown connected with Jevon Echols on a 22-yard touchdown pass late in the opening quarter before Alex McPherson booted a 47-yard field goal to make it 17-0.

In the second quarter, Brown led an 85-yard drive capped by an 8-yard touchdown pass to Donovan Spencer on fourth down. Southern Miss answered with its lone score of the day, an 80-yard march capped by Hampton’s 1-yard touchdown pass to Spencer Robinson and a two-point conversion pass from Justin Beck to make it 24-8. However, Auburn seized momentum right back before the break when McPherson drilled a 55-yard field goal as time expired in the second quarter.

Auburn opened the second half with a 12-play, 65-yard drive that ended with trickery: wide receiver Camden Neptune completed a 5-yard touchdown pass to Brown on fourth-and-goal.

The Tigers added two points late in the third quarter when Hampton was called for intentional grounding in the end zone, resulting in a safety. Omar Mabson II quickly capitalized on the ensuing field position with a 2-yard touchdown plunge, pushing the margin to 43-8.

Southern Miss made a fourth-quarter push behind reserve quarterback Luke Lyddy, driving into Auburn territory before turning the ball over on downs at the Tigers’ 45-yard line with 6:13 remaining. Auburn then ran out the final six minutes on the ground to secure the victory.
