TORONTO (WBAY/Gray News) - A recent study shows chemicals meant to make children safer could actually be harming them.

Researchers at the University of Toronto shared that children’s mattresses can contain toxic chemicals that are released into the air.

According to the findings published in the journal Environmental Science and Technology, some of those chemicals are flame retardants. Others are phthalates used in the manufacturing process and ultraviolet light filters.

The study said that as a child sleeps on the mattresses, their weight and body heat cause the chemicals to release, with the child then breathing them in.

Researchers said the health problems linked to such chemicals include hormone disruptions, early puberty, asthma, heart problems and cancer.

The tested mattresses were purchased in Canada, but the same problem is expected throughout North America because the study said some of the materials tested were made in the U.S. and Mexico.

The study did not share the manufacturers of the mattresses but said they were well-known beds found at leading retail stores.

Whether it’s toys or mattresses, experts urge consumers to look for manufacturers that have some chemical policies or use natural materials in products.

Another tip from child safety experts is to choose neutral-colored mattress components and sheets when possible. They’re less likely to contain UV filters.
