Birmingham Police continue to look for suspects who opened fire on 2 children, man

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - Birmingham Police say two children are in stable condition after being shot on 3rd Avenue West Oct. 15. They were in a car with two adults when someone opened fire as they stopped at a traffic light.

Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin is urging the community to come forward with any information they may have. He emphasized that we cannot allow criminals to feel comfortable committing violent acts, especially when children are involved. Woodfin stated this was unacceptable and encouraged anyone knowledgeable about the incident to come forward.

“Approximately 20 rounds of gunfire occurred in the 1400 block of 3rd Avenue West. When officers arrived on the scene, they found one adult and two juvenile victims suffering from apparent gunshot wounds,” said Birmingham Police Sgt. LaQuitta Wade. The woman was not shot.

According to Sgt. Wade, the shooting took place around 8 p.m. when West Precinct Officers received a ShotSpotter notification. Mayor Woodfin described the attack as extremely bold and unconscionable.

“Somebody was brazen enough a few nights ago to follow a family, a woman and a man in the car and children in the car, and when that car came to a stop at a light to shoot into that car and shoot children,” says Woodfin.

He stressed these are experiences no child should ever face.

“Anytime a child is shot, anytime a child is hurt, we have to step up as adults in this community. We’re the village. We have to protect that child or children. If an adult is comfortable shooting a child and people have that information and won’t come forward, then they have the ability to shoot another child,” says Woodfin.

Birmingham Police are collaborating with federal partners to investigate the shooting and are looking for possible witnesses and surveillance footage from the area. If you have any information, you can contact Crime Stoppers anonymously.
