SHELBY COUNTY, Ala. (WBRC) - The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office is making sure you and your family are safe this Memorial Day weekend.

That’s why they will be setting up a safety checkpoint at the intersection of County Road 52 and County Road 93 near Helena from 10 p.m. Saturday, May 25, to 2 a.m. Sunday, May 26. The agencies taking part are the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, the Helena Police Department, and ALEA.

Deputy Chief Clay Hammac with the SCSO said there’s a potential increase in traffic accidents during this time of the year.

“Tragically in this area of roadway in west Shelby County, we have seen an increase in motor vehicle accidents and unfortunately some of those motor vehicle accidents have resulted in serious injury and historically we have had a handful of fatality accidents in this area,” said Hammac.

Hammac said their goal is to deter any risky driving behaviors.

“And if someone is found to be operating a vehicle in an unsafe manner whether they be impaired or whether they be driving without proper license or insurance then there will be enforcement action taken,” said Hammac.

Sheriff’s deputies said the intent behind a traffic safety checkpoint is to make sure they are maintaining safety on the roadway.

“As your family is driving in the minivan with kids to your in-laws house or your grandparents’ house you need to have piece in mind in knowing that we are doing our part to keep impaired drivers off the roadway,” said Hammac.

Hammac said there will be plenty of blue lights signaling law enforcement presence and the upcoming check point. This is a four-way intersection that will have law enforcement at each corner.

“If a motorist drives through this safety checkpoint, we ask that they have their driver’s license, proof of insurance and vehicle registration as well,” said Hammac.

Hammac said their goal is to make this Memorial Day weekend a happy and safe one. They ask that everyone slow down and have patience.
