‘We were just running’: Mother of 7 and domestic violence survivor loses home in storm
HOUSTON (KHOU) - You can call this homecoming bitter yet sweet.
“It was rough. Me and my kids drove all the way from Minesota,” Keisha Bennett said.
Bennett is a single mother of seven and said her home represented safety and stability for her and her children after surviving the unthinkable.
“I was with my partner for a very long time, and I was dealing with domestic violence, and I was just like tired of it,” she said.
Bennett said after a difficult fight for freedom, she and her children settled in Houston in December.
“Everything was falling into place every day. We were thinking, ‘Texas like we love you. Houston, we love you. Texas you saved us,’” she said.
On Thursday, their lives were changed forever when the family found themselves running for safety yet again.
“We were just running,” she said.
The sturdy walls of their home demolished in an instant and have forced Bennett to figure it out all over again with limited funds and limited options. She is determined to build a new life for her and her children, one of whom lives with autism.
“I ain’t never going back. I mean, I don’t care what happens. I’m still going to have faith and fight,” she said.
