FAIRFIELD, AL (WBRC) - US Steel’s Fairfield Works plans to go ahead with the construction of an electric arc furnace. This will add 150 new jobs to the company.

Jefferson County Commissioners approved a tax rebate for the project in 2015. The company could use $230,000 a year for ten years to build the new state of the art furnace.

“This is exciting news for the entire western Jefferson County. We could be looking at a $215 million investment. 600 construction jobs that are going to begin immediately and 150 permanent full time jobs moving forward,” said Jefferson County Commission President Jimmie Stephens.

The electric arc furnace will produce 1.6 million tons annually starting in 2020.

“This investment is an important step to improve our cost structure and positions our Tubular business to win over the long term,” said David Burritt, the President and CEO of US Steel.
