59/20 bridge project workers brave sub-freezing temps to finish on time

ALDOT crews working in bitter cold

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Below-freezing temperatures were not stopping workers from trying to get that 59/20 bridge project done on time.

ALDOT Regional Engineer DeJarvis Leonard says most of the equipment they’re using has enclosures, so that is helping to keep out the wind. They are also doubling up on the layers and wearing heavy-duty protective gear.

The good news is this is the last weekend for the temporary closure of Carraway Boulevard, which will be closed only this Sunday. They hope to have the 25th Street ramps open by early next week and that should help alleviate traffic problems.

These workers have an incentive to finish, not only on time but early. The city will pay $250,000 for every day they can shave off the project up to 60 days. However, the contractor will be fined $250,000 for every day they go over the 14-month deadline.
