Alabama GOP hopeful, NAACP 'cautiously optimistic' on Sessions AG nomination
BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Nearly 30 years ago, Alabama's Senator Jeff Sessions was in the spotlight for another federal job. During a senate confirmation hearing for a federal judge position, he defined alleged racial remarks.
"I am not a racist, I am not insensitive to blacks," he said at the hearing. "I have supported civil rights activity in my state."
He was also accused of unfavorable remarks about the NAACP.
"We are cautiously optimistic, we want to wait and see," said Hezekiah Jackson/ Birmingham Metro NAACP President.
Jackson is concerned with Sessions possibly holding the office of Attorney General.
"I think that Senator Sessions is just a gentleman who needs to be more educated about the role of the NAACP," said Jackson.
He says the group is willing to give Senator Sessions a chance, but will not hesitate to speak out when they disagree.
"It's quite clear there are a lot of things we do not agree on. We are just simply asking fairness and that we are just asking for equal justice," said Jackson.
Chair of the Alabama republican party, Terry Lathan she says our state's junior U.S. Senator is the right man for the job.
