BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - A Birmingham bar hosted its first weekly community cleanup event, offering volunteers free beer in exchange for picking up trash.

Dave’s Pub in the Five Points neighborhood launched “Trash Talkers” on Saturday. Volunteers who collect trash in the area can trade in their bags for a free beer.

Owner Dan Williams said his life and businesses are in the community and he wants to help keep it clean.

Volunteers are placed on teams and assigned specific areas. They receive gloves and bags before heading out to collect trash. Each full bag can be exchanged for a free beer, up to two per person.

Williams said around 10 people attended the first event. He said he hopes participation will grow.

“Every little bit helps. And the more people we can get out here, I plan for it to be bigger. So I can grow this, and I’m willing to give away as much beer as people will come and collect trash,” Williams said.

Trash Talkers will meet every Saturday at 4 p.m. at Dave’s Pub.
