How weather conditions can affect your hair health
BESSEMER, Ala. (WBRC) - Many people focus on styling routines to maintain healthy hair, but experts say the weather can play a major role in overall hair health.
Changes in humidity, temperature, and seasonal conditions can affect hair texture, moisture levels, and how long a hairstyle lasts. Stylists at Haus of Charm in Bessemer say every hair type responds differently, but no one is immune to changing weather patterns.
Salon owner Char Dock said hydration is one of the most common concerns clients experience throughout the year.
“Everybody needs moisture. Everybody’s lacking hydration somewhat time and season, so I think that’s something across the board all hair can benefit from,” Dock said.
Cold air can dry hair out, while humid conditions pull moisture into the hair, often leading to frizz and reduced style longevity. Dock said protein and hydration treatments can help strengthen hair and restore balance.
Black History Month highlights conversations surrounding textured hair and hair care practices, but professionals say seasonal protection and moisture retention are important for everyone.
Master cosmetologist Whitney Chanel said colder months can create additional challenges because hats and scarves made from cotton or wool can pull moisture from the hair.
“When it’s cold people tend to put things on their head. They’re wearing hats and scarfs. The cotton and wool dries out and pulls the moisture out of people’s hair and they are not putting it back in,” Chanel said.
Master cosmetologist Camisha Rivers recommends avoiding products that can dry hair out, including those containing alcohols and sulfates, and focusing on routines that help maintain moisture.
The stylists suggest using satin or silk materials to help retain moisture and adjusting hair care routines as the seasons change to keep hair healthy year-round.
