BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - Samford head football coach Chris Hatcher has been relieved of his duties, the university announced Sunday.

“Coach Hatcher has always represented the university and our football program with dignity and class,” stated Samford VP for Intercollegiate Athletics Martin Newton. “We’ve enjoyed some incredible moments together with our success on the field and in the classroom. However, the results on the field the last few seasons have not met our expectations, and it’s time to go in a different direction. I wish Chris and his family all the best moving forward and know the Bulldog family is appreciative of all his hard work.”

Hatcher came to Samford in 2015 and posted a 62-59 career record with the Bulldogs, but the team has fallen to 1-9 this season and have only won more than six games three times since 2018.

Samford says a national search for their next head coach will begin immediately and an interim coach will be named at a later date.

The Bulldogs are back on the field next week, Saturday, Nov. 15, at Austin Peay. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
