Tuscaloosa man dead after argument leads to gunfire exchange
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WBRC) - The Tuscaloosa County Sherriff’s office is investigating an incident that left a 51-year-old man dead Sunday morning.
According to police, a 911 call came in around 3:14 a.m. regarding a shooting in the 2000 block of Stardust Drive in Tuscaloosa County. When deputies arrived, they found two men shot.
The first, a 23-year-old Tuscaloosa resident, had been shot and was suffering non-life-threatening injuries. He was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The second, who police have identified as 53-year-old Reggie Coverson, was dead on the scene.
Deputies were advised by a 36-year-old man who was on the scene that he had shot Coverson. He was taken to the Violent Crimes Unit and interviewed by investigators. TCSO also interviewed multiple people who were in the area when the incident occurred.
After speaking to all parties involved and submitting the information to the District Attorney’s Office, police determined that a verbal dispute had led to the incident. Police also determined that Coverson was the aggressor and was shot in self-defense.
According to TCSO, evidence shows that Coverson shot the 23-year-old man and was then shot by the 36-year-old on the scene.
The 23-year-old has not been identified by police, but is in stable condition.
No charges have been filed at this time.
The case will be presented to the Tuscaloosa County Grand Jury for further review.
