First Alert: Pop-up showers and storms this evening
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - Happy Saturday! Another day, another round of rain and thunderstorms is expected to continue this evening. First Alert AccuTrack showing pop-up showers and storms east of I-65 but I’m not ruling out the chance for a storm or shower to occur in west AL later on.
Any storms that develop could become strong and produce some gusty winds, lightning and hail. All the rain should dissipate across the region overnight and for the start of Mother’s Day. Expect a cloudy night sky with temperatures dropping into the upper 70s by 8 to 9 p.m.
Mother’s Day forecast: There is again at least a chance for a strong storm cluster to develop with some potential for severe storms for Mother’s Day, but generally lower rain chances are expected tomorrow with a chance for more micro-burst storms developing during the late morning and early afternoon.
I think Mother’s Day will end up as our hottest day of the weekend with highs in the upper 80s and lower 90s. The heat index will likely climb into the mid to upper 90s. If you plan on working outside or doing anything outdoors, make sure you stay hydrated and take several breaks. With plenty of heat and humidity, you can never rule out the threat for a few pop-up storms so keep your WBRC First Alert weather app handy. We will hold on to a 30% chance for isolated storms Sunday afternoon and evening. Any storm that develops could become strong or severe.
Next Big Thing: The big story going into next week is the chance to see a cold front move through Central Alabama. We will likely see rain and storm chances increase a bit Monday as the front moves into the state. We are looking at a 30% to 40% chance for storms on Monday with highs in the upper 80s. It looks like we’ll see showers and scattered storms Tuesday and by Wednesday storm chances look more likely south of I-20. Temperatures will likely trend a few degrees cooler Tuesday through Friday staying in the low to mid 80s.
