Man shoots, kills his own father during Tuscaloosa domestic situation
TUSCALOOSA, AL (WBRC) - No immediate charges are being filed in a domestic shooting that happened Monday morning in Tuscaloosa.
Investigators say the man who fired the fatal shot is claiming self defense in a shooting where he shot and killed his own father.
Authorities roped off a home near the 3500 block of Hargrove Road East with crime tape just before 7 a.m.
A 40-year-old man went there to get belongings thrown out by his father, 82 year-old Archie McDaniel.
"When the son got out of the vehicle, Mr. McDaniel confronted him with a handgun and threatened to kill him. And actually did fire a shot that grazed one of his sons," said Captain Kip Hart.
When other relatives arrived at the scene, they say McDaniel appeared ready to shoot them too.
"Even after being shot, he was still trying to de-escalate it to make his father drop the weapon. Which he didn't. And unfortunately he raised and threatened another family member and he had to make that decision," Hart added.
The son McDaniel grazed was also armed.
Authorities say he shot his father to protect others outside the home during the incident.
Investigators say the elder McDaniel may have been "experiencing issues with his health that affected his judgment."
Evidence in the case will be sent to a grand jury that will determine whether or not charges will be filed.
