HOMEWOOD, AL (WBRC) - If you want to speak to the Rev. David Thompson, you better catch him soon.

At the end of July, he's headed to the Olympics in Rio for a month.  He'll be serving as an athlete service coordinator.

"We are former athletes who are selected by athletes to go and support, to mentor and cheer on athletes in competition," Thompson explained.

He was on the USA Men's Handball team for 10 years so he knows what it takes to reach the top level of a sport.

"And now to be on the other side and see all the hard work and dedication it takes to prepare athletes to have their moment...it's incredible to be a part of it," he said.

While Thompson is excited about his upcoming trip, he's also aware of all the issue Brazil is facing like the Zika virus and crime issues.

He's aware, but not afraid. He's already been to Brazil a number of times and has always felt safe.

As for Zika, he says the Olympic committee has already held meetings and had them meet with doctors who've assured them the games will be safe.

"I'm really not concerned about that and don't want to be concerned because it's a great moment for these athletes and things like Zika and other things won't detract from their moment," Thompson said. "I've just got to walk by faith and not let my life be about worry."
