Parker High School asks for help buying new band uniforms

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Ask the members of the A.H. Parker High marching band what they love about it and they have no problem telling you.

"Being in the stands and playing music against other schools and battling--that's fun," says a flutist.

"It makes you feel better about some things you stand for," says drummer Quantez Oden.

What do they like least about band? Their uniforms.

"They're old--buttons falling off," explains Oden.

"We're missing a few things. Instead of people walking around with Parker, it says Park…," King goes on to say.

Band director James White says they're not exaggerating. "And when I saw the uniform, my mouth almost dropped. I was like, 'Oh no!'," he recalls as he just became the band teacher this school year.

"This is one example," White says, holding up one of the old uniforms. "And this is good compared to some of them. We're holding up with pins and trying to put buttons on and some of them don't zip up anymore."

That's why the Parker United Alumni Association, Inc. started a Go Fund Me page asking the community to help them raise $60,000 to purchase 100 new uniforms.

"It's just nothing like putting on a uniform that's clean, nice, looking new to make you feel good and that you're a part of something," White says. "So I want this for them and they deserve it. They really deserve it."
