TUSCALOOSA, AL (WBRC) - A new statue on the campus of the University of Alabama honors a veteran.

On Wednesday, the university honored a former UA student and Air Force member killed in combat. The family of Mark Forester was filled with joy as they watched the unveiling of their beloved soldier's bronze statue.

Forester earned a bachelor's degree at the University of Alabama in 2006, before becoming a combat controller.

His brother Thad Forester said he wanted to fight terrorism and that he did in Afghanistan, where he was killed in combat in 2010.

The statue his brother said will forever remind everyone the ultimate sacrifice Forester made for his country.

"It's an emotional thing and more so leading up today because I've been a part of the creation of it. It's really powerful to see a 3D object of my brother," said Forester.

Forester's brother also started a podcast sharing stories of brave veterans across the area.
