BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - For the fourth consecutive year, Birmingham City Schools will be providing free breakfast and lunch to students regardless of their family's income status.

"We want to make sure all our students have healthy meals," said Director of Child Nutrition Michelle Sailes. "We know that healthy meals contributes to education and academics success."

The USDA's community eligibility provision is the program they're using for funding.

However, how long it lasts is unknown.

"What usually takes place is that we have been able to renew it each year, up to four years, and this is our fourth year. So we really don't know what is next," said Sailes.

That's why Sailes said parents and kids need to act now.

"I just want to encourage our parents to send their students out to receive breakfast, and to receive lunch, and just take advantage of this great opportunity that we have," she said.
