TUSCALOOSA, AL (WBRC) - Steven Arango, a University of Alabama law student and Marine, is interested in honoring Captain George Whitney, a Bates College alumnus, after reading an article about how Whitney was killed in action while reportedly serving with the CIA in Afghanistan last December. Arango calls Whitney a Renaissance man and is supporting the creation of a bust in his honor.

Others, including Bates classmate and a close friend of Whitney, are brainstorming various ways his legacy could be memorialized. The school is in the early stages of discussion on how best to do that.

Since Bates' founding in 1855, the college has recognized members of their community who have dedicated their lives in service to the country in several different ways.
