TUSCALOOSA, AL (WBRC) - Wednesday begins the start of the fall semester at The University of Alabama.

Official enrollment numbers are not available until after the start of school. However, UA has experienced steady enrollment growth for more than the past decade. Fall 2016 enrollment reached an all-time high of 37,665 students. Of those students, 53 percent were from out of state.

Freshman Allie Hicks, from the Atlanta area, says she chose to attend UA after visiting campus.

"I didn't want to go to The University of Alabama until I came to The University of Alabama," Hicks said. "Once I stepped on campus, I knew it was somewhere I wanted to be, and I love it."

"I was looking for something far and different," Freshman Felicity Martinez from Long Island, New York, said.

"As soon as I got on the campus I was like, 'I am in love, this is where I want to be,' and I applied and I got in and here I am."

The University of Alabama estimates the total cost of attendance for the 2017-2018 academic year, including indirect costs like transportation and miscellaneous expenses, at $30,184 per year for in-state students and $48,634 for out-of-state students.
