BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Former Parker High School basketball star and Phoenix Suns' point guard Eric Bledsoe is giving back to the Birmingham community.

"I grew up here, I can't say that enough. I know what it takes and I know how hard it can be. So for me, I hope to touch every kid here," NBA player Eric Bledsoe said.

The Eric Bledsoe Foundation held a backpack giveaway on Saturday at Regions Field. More than 1,000 backpacks full of school supplies were handed out to kids of all ages.

"We have some amazing kids in the community and they just don't get enough attention and I just want to help bring light to the situation," Bledsoe added.

This is the third year Bledsoe has set aside one weekend in August to come back to Birmingham and give back to the community.

"I'm just trying to get these kids off the streets and come have fun with me for a weekend," he added.

Bledsoe will wrap up his weekend in Birmingham with his celebrity basketball game on Sunday at 4 p.m. at Lawson State Community College.
