AVONDALE, AL - Birmingham's Police Chief A.C. Roper says four persons of interest are in custody following a shooting that claimed the life of a 2-year-old boy and left his parents hospitalized.
The shooting took place Saturday night in the Avondale commercial district.
Lt. Bryan Shelton identified the child as Ron'Narius Austin.
"Our children, particularly at that age are really vulnerable. Right now a family is mourning and has to bury a toddler because of gun violence. A big part of the investigation is to find out what happened in that alleyway that caused the exchange gunfire between the two vehicles," Shelton said.
Birmingham police were on patrol when they heard multiple gunshots. A white car was found at 41st Street and 3rd Avenue South with bullet holes and the driver's side window had been shot out.
The parents and child were found at the scene. The male suffered a gunshot wound to the back while the female was shot in the arm.
Police say the shooting happened in the ally of the 4200 block of 42 Ave. South. Investigators say a vehicle with at least four other people was involved in a shootout with the victim's vehicle.
