Coroner identifies prominent Cullman resident, intruder dead after home invasion

CULLMAN COUNTY, AL (WBRC) - Authorities in Cullman County say two people are dead after an altercation Monday night at a residence on County Road 1301.

The Cullman County Sheriff's Office confirms an intruder shot a homeowner before the intruder was subsequently killed by another occupant in the home.

The coroner in Cullman County has identified the homeowner as 73-year-old Stephen K. Griffith and the intruder as 45-year-old Patrick O. Walker.

Griffith is a prominent resident and a well-known attorney in Cullman County.

The person who killed the intruder has not yet been identified by authorities.

Executive Director of the Alabama State Bar Phillip W. McCallum issued the following statement on the death of Griffith:

"Steve was a fine, well-respected Alabama lawyer. We at the bar are saddened by his passing and mourn his loss. Steve served the state bar as a commissioner for six years. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Jackie and the rest of the family."
