4-year-old girl injured in Birmingham shooting dies

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Birmingham police have arrested and charged a man with attempted murder and assault after a 4-year-old girl and 68-year-old woman were wounded during what authorities called a 'shootout' this weekend.

Police confirm the 4-year-old girl has died Wednesday morning. She is identified as Taleayah Stafford.

The woman remains in the hospital.

26-year-old Antonio Fowler was arrested on Tuesday and charged with attempted murder and two counts of assault. All three charges carry a bond totaling $450,000.

Detectives are working on filing a new charge against Fowler.

Fowler is being held at the Jefferson County Jail.

The shootout involved two men on 47th Street North. One of the shooters brought his 4-year-old daughter to the gun fight. That shooter started firing shots inside the other male's car.

His gun jammed and at that point, the other shooter got out of his car and started shooting back.

During that shootout, the 4-year-old was shot in the back of the head and the bullet came out through the face.

Also, another woman who was driving on 47th Street was struck by a stray bullet. She was shot in the neck.

She drove herself to Fire Station No. 12 and was transported to the hospital. Lt. Sean Edwards said her injuries are life-threatening.

The shooter with the 4-year-old in the car drove to 46th Place North and that's where he realized the girl had been shot. He did not take her to the hospital. Someone else drove the girl to the hospital.
